Funders should examine the opportunities they are offering and who they might be leaving out. If the premise behind the fund is that it's open to any artist who meets the eligibility criteria, examine whether any artist—and in particular artists with disabilities—could actually take advantage of what's being offered.

They say you should go into a job interview with a firm, confident handshake. Paralysis has made my handshake floppy and weak, but it remains confident. I always reach for the handshake, even when the recipient is skeptical and awkward at touching my hands. I deserve the dignity of touch.

I’ve been driving for over 15 years.

I own my own vehicle.

I have never once pumped my own gas.

I live in Illinois and the reason I have never pumped my own gas is because I am a quadriplegic woman due to a spinal cord injury from a car accident. I use a powered wheelchair and adapted vehicle to drive, navigate and access my world. My wheels are my freedom... until I run out of gas.
